How does cannabis chemistry work?

Whats in Cannabis?

Aside from the popular CBD and THC, cannabis plants contain over  70 different cannabinoids, 120 terpenoids, and 23 different flavonoids. These terpenes are said to influence the absorption, flavors, and effects of cannabinoids. Most cannabinoids will not get one “high” aside from THC.

The Temperature for smoking THC

The different chemical compounds in Cannabis have different boiling points. The plant's physiological effects, potency, and taste will depend on the temperature that the plant material is burned. The best temperature for burning cannabis lies between 175 and 200 degrees Celsius (347-392 degrees Fahrenheit).

This is the ideal temperature for releasing cannabinoids and terpenes. Any hotter and the chemical properties of the cannabinoids and terpenes may begin to break down - resulting in an ineffective high.

Keep note that this is a rough estimate, each cannabinoid and terpenoid have their own burning temperatures.

Common Cannabinoids

THC(tetrahydrocannabinol)- is an anti-inflammatory, produces intoxication, sedation,

THCA - Transforms into THC when plant material is burned

CBD(cannabidiol) - Aids in psychological ailments. Prevents anxiety caused by THC. Is an anti-inflammatory. Legal As a dietary supplement in all 50 States.

Common Terpenoids

Limonene - Taste like citrus used for weight loss and cancer treatment

Myrcene - Earthy

Alpha-Pinene - Smells of pine and is anti-inflammatory

These cannabinoids and terpenes are present in the flowers trichomes, most commonly known as kief. A good Weed grinder will prevent trichomes from being rubbed on to fingers.
